How to make your business stand out from the crowd

0

Running your own business is a dream that is shared by many different people; it offers new freedoms and the ability to be in control of your own destiny. Some potential entrepreneurs are attracted by the opportunity of limitless earning potential, while others like the prospect of not having a boss.

However, these perks don’t come without trade-offs.

The unlimited earnings potential comes with the risk of lower earnings; a life without a boss really means you have to answer to your customers instead; and running your own business makes you responsible for all of its functions, not just your specialist area of expertise. That means you need to take care of the accounts, manage the IT, and recruit your team.

Two other functions that you’re responsible for are your sales and your marketing. Without these, potential customers won’t know that you exist, what products you offer, or where to buy them from.

Therefore, it’s important to make sure that you are au fait with some basic principles of marketing and also techniques that you can use to make your business stand out from the crowd.

If you need inspiration for the latter, this list may give you some ideas.

Give stuff away for free

It may seem counterintuitive at first, but giving stuff away for free is a great way to get the attention of your customers and, if it’s done right, increase your sales.

The act of giving stuff away for free comes in many different forms, including free trials, giveaways, or even providing guides and educational content.

Free trials

Free trials come in various flavours ranging from time-limited access to a piece of software, to free spins in an online casino. In both of these cases, the customer has the opportunity to try out the product or service before they commit to spending money.

They’re not universally effective though. Free trials can be great for businesses that have business models based on recurring subscriptions and whose customers are unlikely to only need the software as a one-off.

An example of this is Sage, one of the biggest providers of cloud-based accounts software. It offers a 30 day free trial of each of its packages, knowing that businesses need accounting software year-round. This makes abuse of the trial pretty difficult.

In his blog, Niel Patel discussed that some free trials may “give away all the value”, removing any incentive for the customer to hand over any cash. An example he gives of this is an application that arranges or hosts an “annual user group conference”. Once the task is complete, the customer can cancel the free trial.

Giveaways

Manufacturers of physical products can sometimes use giveaways as an alternative to a free trial. For example, in the UK, many brands offer free items through the Shopmium and Checkout Smart apps. Consumers can buy the products as normal, scan their receipt, and be repaid for the amount they paid.

This allows customers to try out a new or updated product to see if they like it. If they do, companies hope that they then go on to buy more in the future.

Educational content

Educational content is another way to give away stuff for free to attract customers. Hubspot, one of the leading forces in inbound and content marketing, advises businesses to provide insightful, unique, and useful information that customers and potential customers will find value in.

This could be anything from guides on undertaking DIY tasks like those produced by B&Q, to whitepapers on the technical details behind electronic signatures offered by DocuSign.

In each case, you’re demonstrating your expertise to your customers, helping to build trust and giving them a reason to return to you when they’re ready to buy. A good content strategy will provide useful information at each stage of the consumer buying process, subtly helping to persuade people that you have the best option on the market.

Offer a guarantee

If you’re confident that your product or service provides value to your customers, you can demonstrate this to them by offering a moneyback guarantee. In his book, The Four Hour Work Week, Tim Ferriss described that he had used such guarantees in his businesses and they had been a great success each time.

He explained that customers almost never took up the offer of a refund, either because they were satisfied with the product or service, or because they felt it was too much work to make a request. Regardless, the guarantee helped to increase sales as his customers felt safer and that there was less risk in making a purchase.

Other types of guarantee include a price guarantee, where you offer to match (or even beat) companies that offer a cheaper product or service, or a lifetime guarantee, where you will replace products that fail to last forever.

Offer great customer service

You should always be aiming to deliver great customer service, but sometimes businesses can forget this, resulting in the loss of often loyal and long-term clientele.

While you always want transactions to run smoothly, it is inevitable that things sometimes go wrong. This can turn many customers off returning, but if you fix the problem, in a personal and amicable way, the customer is more likely to return.

Writing for Fly Blue Kite, Laura Click gave an example of this. She bought a pair of running shoes from Fleet Feet Sports; however, after a few weeks of running in them, she found that they were becoming painful. Despite using them for quite some time, the store didn’t quibble, accepted the return, and helped her pick out a new pair that wouldn’t hurt her feet. In return, they got a customer for life. In her own words: “Why would I buy shoes anywhere else?”

It’s not just one customer you keep by offering great service. These happy customers are likely to go and tell their friends (and complete strangers) about your business. Sitel Group conducted research into customer experiences and the likelihood of them posting on social media about it. They found that almost half of consumers would talk about it online or post a review.

Therefore, keeping your customers happy will make them likely to become advocates for your business, doing some of your marketing work for you.

I’m no bully and anyone disagreeing gets a Chinese burn, warns Priti Patel

Embattled Priti Patel today insists she is not a bully – and warns anyone who says otherwise will get a Chinese burn.

The fiery Home Secretary Priti Patel, fresh from giving a hapless clerk a wedgie and flicking her driver’s ear, was today rebuked for breaking rules on ministers’ behaviour.

Priti Patel has always denied allegations of bullying, but an internal inquiry, which Boris Johnson is expected to act upon at some point this decade, allegedly calls her actions into question.

Home Office insider Lorraine Fisher, 34, speaking while cowering in a cupboard, whispered: “She’ll pull my hair again if she gets wind of me talking to you.

“But really, she is lovely and it’s just her way of dealing with difficult people.”

Speaking to reporters ahead of an expected announcement from the Prime Minister, Ms Patel snarled: “I am not a bully. If I hear any of you suggesting otherwise, I will give you a Chinese burn.”

King Edmund killing: police to make arrests

By Hugh Dunnett, Crime Correspondent

Suffolk Police are close to making arrests following an exhaustive 1,151-year investigation into the murder of Edmund, the last king of East Anglia.

The Martyr King, 28, was attacked by a gang of drunk Danish tourists, who riddled him with arrows before chopping off his head and throwing it in the woods.

But the culprits were never caught and were believed to have fled abroad, probably on a longship back to Denmark.

Police appeals for witnesses were unsuccessful, but new DNA evidence suggests the attackers have family members still living in Copenhagen.

A spokesman for Suffolk Police said: “On Friday, November 20, 869, at 2.34pm, a 28-year-old king was murdered. We are liaising with our Danish colleagues and expect to make arrests in the coming days.”

King Edmund killed

The news will be a huge relief to residents of Suffolk, Norfolk and parts of Cambridgeshire, who have been without a King of the Angles ever since King Edmund died.

He was savagely attacked by members of the ruthless and violent Viking gang for refusing to renounce his belief in Christ (see startling CCTV picture of poor old Edmund being tied up and shot with arrows).

Once his head was found, it was reunited with his body and eventually buried at Bury St Edmunds abbey – a significant clue to the origin of the West Suffolk town’s name.

Local vicar The Rev Evan Elpuss said Edmund was a brave king. “He stood up for his religion in the face of these drunk louts from Denmark, but it cost him his life. News of arrest is most welcome indeed.”

Edmund was regarded as the patron saint of England in the Middle Ages but has since been usurped by St George, who was known for killing dragons close to his Turkish home.

The biggest win in blackjack history

0

Blackjack is one of the oldest forms of casino table games still enjoyed today. It is not just one of the most interesting games – it has also paid out some of the highest casino prizes in history.

The good news is, blackjack can still pay out well to lucky players even today. And you can easily find different blackjack games at El Royale casino. All you need to do is master the simple rules and choose a good casino to play at. If you’re lucky enough, you may end up being the next blackjack millionaire.

While you’re still dreaming about the cash you might win from blackjack, let’s discuss the biggest blackjack win in history – 40 million dollars in Las Vegas.

How Kerry Packer won $40 million at the MGM Grand

If you haven’t heard of Kerry Packer yet, we introduce him to you now. Kerry Packer is the biggest winner ever of the blackjack game. Interestingly, Kerry did not only make a one-time huge win from blackjack. He won huge amounts of money more than once. Let’s tell you the story.

Kerry Packer’s first major victory in blackjack took place in 1991. It happened in Las Vegas at the Hilton. He played at a public blackjack table where people watched and cheered. Since then, three decades have passed, and there are no clear details of each of the rounds. What we know is that Packer went home with a huge price of 7 million dollars that night. He was celebrated that night at Hilton and also offered a special suite after that. However, the huge win did not stop him from playing blackjack.

In 1995 at the MGM Grand, Packer got the biggest blackjack win ever. He wagered 250,000 dollars on each round, playing eight hands continuously on that same table. In 40 minutes of playing, Packer won a huge $40 million. This was the biggest win that ever happened at the MGM Grand Casino at the time. That night, Packer was so excited that he tipped the dealers a million dollars.

Even though Packer got the biggest blackjack win, he isn’t considered as one of the most successful players. It is recorded that he once lost more than 27 million dollars within 10 months. However, it still seems clear that he won more than he lost.

Biggest blackjack team win

While Packer is known for taking the biggest win as a single man, a blackjack group also won between $50 to $100 million. This happened sometime between 1980 and 1990 at Atlantic City. It was a team of students.  The story of this huge win became popular when it was featured in a blockbuster movie titled ‘21.’ The movie gives a rough idea behind the real story.

It was told that MIT grad students studied the life of Bill Kaplan, a graduate of Harvard who had beaten the blackjack system for many years. The MIT students overheard him discussing how he won $30,000 from a total of $1000 wager. That night, students asked him to teach them, and so they formed a blackjack team.

Some other sources have proven that the students in the team were not from MIT only but also from Yale, Harvard, and other respected universities. However, the movie only focused on students from MIT.

Kaplan led the blackjack team, which consisted of around 80 players, to victory. It is believed that they won an amount between $50 to 100 million, which they distributed among themselves.

Other notable blackjack wins

Here are some other popular big wins:

  • $1.5 million at Treasure Island Casino by ‘Shoeless’ Joe in 1995
  • $800,000 at Hard Rock Casino by Ben Affleck
  • $470,000 at Bellagio by Michael Geismar

Blakeney Bomber top of UK’s £16bn defence spending list

Britain’s military chiefs have already identified where they want to spend the £16 billion extra budget announced by the Prime Minister.

They say the new Norfolk-built Blakeney Bomber will make the RAF the envy of the world.

Each hi-tech jet costs a staggering £400 million but will beef up the country’s military capabilities.

The Blakeney Bomber is developed by Spuckler Industries, one of Norfolk’s biggest employers – it has three people.

CEO Bubba Spuckler told the Suffolk Gazette: “Our jet is bootiful. I spoke to that nice Chris Grayling and he said he would recommend to Boris Johnson that the Government buys 15 of them.”

But aviation experts are not sure the Blakeney Bomber is well equipped for modern warfare and defence duties.

“For a start,” said military consultant Lorraine Fisher, 34, “the bloody thing can’t even get off the ground.”

Others believe Boris Johnson’s administration should be trusted to make the right spending choices. Steve Walshe, a conservative councillor, said: “The Blakeney Bomber looks an exciting piece of kit that any nation would be proud of.

“It will be imperious over the skies of Britain, once they develop an engine.”

Coal-fired power stations to generate electricity for all the new electric cars

Coal fired electric car

The Government will generate enough electricity to power greener electric cars by re-opening all of Britain’s coal-fired power stations, it has emerged.

Environment campaigners are delighted that new petrol and diesel cars will be outlawed from 2030, but may not be so pleased about how the pollution-saving scheme will become possible.

In order to provide enough electricity for everyone’s electric cars, pollution-spouting coal-fired power stations will be recommissioned across Britain.

Clouds of smoke and carbon dioxide will then merge together to form a haze and smog, setting planet-saving green initiatives back decades.

A Downing Street insider said: “We got all the positive headlines by announcing all new cars must be electric from 2030. It’s the flagship policy of our green revolution.

“However, we have not told anybody where all the electricity will be coming from tp charge the cars up. Hopefully nobody will ask.”

Experts predict up to ten new power stations will be needed to cope with demand, particularly at rush hour.

But the cheapest option will be burning fossil fuels across Britain once again – generating more pollution than will be saved by scrapping diesel and petrol.

“I’m not sure anyone in the Government has really thought this through,” said motorist Lorraine Fisher, 34. “I suppose we could have a few more nuclear power stations as well, risking an environmental disaster on a global scale.”

According to lobbyists, coal power plants are a country’s top source of carbon dioxide emissions, the primary cause of global warming.

How to create a winning home theatre setup

0

During the holidays, one-way families stay together is by relaxing and watching movies. It isn’t every time you feel like going to the cinema to see a movie. If you want to enjoy movies at home, you will need to build your home theatre environment to improve your viewing pleasure.

To do this, you need to put together several devices and make certain preparations to have a cinema ready environment in your home. You don’t have to spend a fortune to build your home theatre system. You can build one that meets your needs and your budget

The major area where people prefer to install their home theater is in the living room, some people may decide to make a game room where they can build their mini cinema. The rooms you choose to install your home theater system will determine what you need to buy to improve your home theater experience.

Here are some of the steps you need to follow to get a winning home theater setup.

Your living space

If you have a large house, you can dedicate a room for movie nights with family. Choosing the room for your home theater setup is the first step to improving your movie experience. After you make this decision, you will need to look at other changes to be made in the room. The ambient light is one of them, and this is because of the light that is emitted from your TV screen. You should ensure that the room does not produce unwanted lights. If it is your living room, you will need to get shades to blind the lights whenever you want to watch movies.  You may also want to consider the space around you, to know where to keep your home theater equipment.

Choose your TV

If you want to enjoy your movies, your TV is also part of your home theater network. You will want to match your viewing experience with your sound. It is preferable to get a large screen high definition TVs. We now have 4k and 8k TVs that produce excellent graphics. You will enjoy it better in a 65 in TV display. When setting up your TV, decide on whether you want it mounted or standing. It is better to have your TV around your eye level.

Home theatre receiver

Your home theatre receiver is the link between your TV, speakers, and AV components. You will be connecting your devices to the receiver, and that is why you need to get a quality one. The receiver will affect the sound quality of your speakers and it will also be useful to transfer videos to your TV. You can get a quality brand like the Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

Speakers for surround sound

Extra speakers add to your home theatre experience. Your home theatre setup wouldn’t be as immersive if you only have a standalone loudspeaker. And if you truly want to experience that movie theatre sound quality at home, the experts at The Product Analyst recommend a 5.1 speaker setup to recreate the high-quality soundstage. While you do need to connect multiple speakers around the room to achieve surround sound, a 5.1 speaker setup is perfect for family rooms especially when you watch a lot of movies or play tons of video games. And to keep your setup clean, you can make hidden media cabinets and place them at certain points around the room.

No gammon in Sainsbury all of a sudden

There is a sudden shortage of gammon at Sainsbury stores across Britain, it has emerged.

Ever since the supermarket giant launched its Christmas TV ad featuring a black family, gammons cannot be found anywhere in the aisles.

Retail experts are baffled by the sudden disappearance of gammon, which is normally spotted in large numbers at most UK supermarkets.

Shopping expert Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “After it launched its adorable TV ad featuring a father waxing lyrical about how good his Christmas gravy is, there has been a shortage of gammon in Sainsbury.

“However, most people are grateful because it means they can shop in peace without bumping into any pink-fleshed, salty characters.”

But shopper Steve Walshe, 44, from Little England, was fuming. “I am going to be doing my shopping at Aldi from now on, because at least I can relate to Kevin the carrot.”
