There are a lot of ways to entertain the kids, and not all of them will cost you the earth or require you to take out a second mortgage on your property. There are, of course, financial benefits and grants available for those who may need them.
Most kids with a little encouragement will quite happily entertain themselves. We have all been there, buying that perfect and far from cheap present and then sitting back whilst your little bundle of enthusiasm spends hours playing with the empty box, and yet the expensive contents are just left to the side.
If you are feeling a little bit stuck for ideas or just want some inspiration, here are three things that may get you thinking along other lines.
Bug hunts
Gardens aren’t just for growing potatoes, but whether you have any outdoor space to your home or not, there are always bug hunts to go.
These are fun and educational, as you can look up any little bug found on the internet and give some background to what the little creature is that you have found as well as its natural habitat etc. Bugs are everywhere and not just at the end of the garden or in the countryside, and you will be amazed at the different types and what benefit they have to the food chain or environment.
There is also the added bonus of being able to get your kids to make a bug hotel. These can be quite elaborate, and even if you do not want one in your outdoor space, a grandparent may appreciate one for theirs.
Picnics
Picnics are always a welcome treat, especially if they are enjoyed with friends or family. You do not even have to go far. Some of the best picnics can be had in your own garden or if the weather is bad on a picnic blanket in your front room.
Letting your kids decide what it is they are going to have for their picnics is one of the most important parts, and if you can get them to actually make or assemble their own food gives even more enjoyment to the kids.
Storytime
Going somewhere like a forest, beach, or somewhere of interest like a fort or ruin and storytelling can be a really enjoyable treat for the kids. The amount of input from you depends massively on how old your kids are. For the young, you will probably have to do all the storytelling, but for infant school kids upwards, once you have given them an idea, they will be able to run with it and create their own stories together, as this article in The Psychologist shows, stories are essential to cognitive growth.
Tell stories about minibeasts living in the area you are walking through, or dragons hiding amongst the trees, or fairies flitting from flower to flower. It can be really interesting hearing where their minds are taking them.
Russia has confirmed female weightlifter Lorraina Fischev, 34, will represent the country at the Olympics this year.
Fischev, pictured above, has spent many years training in the gym and she is expected to lift more than twice the previous Olympic record.
Russian Olympic team head Dmitri Popov said Fischev was head and shoulders above all other Russian female weightlifters.
“We hear New Zealand has got a strong line-up this year.
“Well, let me tell you, they have a shock coming to them.
“Lorraina can lift more than most other men, let alone women.”
Extra attention has been thrown on to this year’s women’s Olympic weightlifting category, and Russia’s selection may well raise more eyebrows.
UK Olympic ambassador Steve Walshe said: “There’s something not quite right about this.”
Fischev is one of 23 Russians allowed to compete at the Olympics as “neutral athletes” owing to previous doping scandals.

The first person tomorrow to mention that the days are getting shorter is a complete numpty, Britain agrees.
Before we’ve even had anything resembling a summer, no one wants to be reminded we’re on the slippery slope to winter.
Office worker Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “It’s the same every year – as soon as the Summer Solstice is over, some prat in accounts makes the same smug remark about the nights drawing in.
“Well, this year, we can all agree to tell him to stick his calendar remarks where the sun don’t shine.
“Which is a bit ironic, really.”
Nights drawing in
But a weather person added: “What is more ironic is that, while indeed the days will now be getting shorter, we’re hoping for a warmer spell of weather soon.
“No doubt that prat in accounts will then be moaning about it being too hot.”
Thousands of jam jars are being removed from supermarkets across the UK because they are dressed as Arabs.
The jars of tasty strawberry and blackcurrant preserves sparked outrage for being racist because they appear to be wearing a colourful keffiyeh.
The traditional headdress is worn in many parts of the Middle East, especially the Persian Gulf.
British Culture Ministry spokesperson Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “These jam jars clearly have racist overtones.
“It’s the same as a country like Kuwait selling its pickle jars with a bowler hat on top. We wouldn’t like it.”

Tens of thousands of jam jars are being recalled and will be replaced with metal screw tops.
It’s the biggest scandal to hit jam and pickles industry since Norfolk woman Edna Spratt tried to steal a rival’s prize chutney recipe.

Millions of Brits forced to holiday in the UK are being encouraged to make the most of a dry spell this Saturday.
A pleasant break in the rain is forecast for the Suffolk coast, meaning folks can venture out and see something of the area.
The rest of this week and all of next will be a traditional UK summer holiday washout.
And with indoor COVID restrictions, holidaymakers will either remain in their holiday accommodation or wander around getting wet.
Suffolk Head of Tourism Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “Saturday does look lovely in Southwold.
“There will be no sun, but at least it won’t be pelting down with rain for a few hours.
“That will be the perfect time for everyone to rush out on to the beaches or explore the countryside.
“You can cram a lot into one day, and we feel sure this will make up for not being on the beach in Spain this year.”
But holidaymaker Steve Walshe, 43, was not convinced.
“The weather has been quite nice over the past few weeks,” he said, “so we decided to go for it and book our staycation, just as the Government has ordered.
“Now it’s going to piss down every day.”

If you have been interested in and intrigued by the business world for a long time, there is no reason why you cannot start up a small business in your hometown.
You can open a business at any stage of your life or your career, whether you are newly out of university, have just left high school, or are coming up for retirement. Then, rather than let your dreams escape you for another year, here are some top tips that you should follow if you are interested in opening a business in Suffolk or the surrounding area.
Take an online business course
Before you even start to consider your business idea or the legalities of starting up your own business, you need to make sure that you have the appropriate knowledge and skills to open up the business that you have in mind. This is especially important if you have had no prior experience of the business world or if you have been working in a different, unrelated sector for the majority of your working life. Although there are many ways to learn about the world of business, one of the most direct ways to do this is to study it.
If you are struggling to find a course of study that interests you in the Suffolk area, you should consider opting for an online business course. Online business courses can be advantageous as they can allow you to complete the necessary assignments from anywhere in the world, and all while making the right preparations to start up your business in your hometown. You can even take this business course once you have opened your business if you suddenly decide that there are gaps in your knowledge or skill set.
Then, if you are looking for an appropriate business qualification that can help you to become the entrepreneur that you have always wanted to be, you should consider applying for Suffolk University’s MBA Online Program. Although you might believe that this university is only suitable for you due to the name, the online nature of some of its courses can allow you to get the business qualification that you need wherever you live.
Find your business idea and niche
Then, once you believe that you have the appropriate knowledge of business under your belt, if you are ready to start up a business in your name, you should start to consider business ideas that you are interested in. Not only should you think about what ideas could make money and what people in Suffolk could be interested in, but you also need to take into account your background and strengths. For instance, many people set up a business within the same sector as their previous job, as this is an industry that they will have detailed knowledge of. You also need to think about how much money this idea will cost to set up.
Some of the best business ideas for those in Suffolk include those in industries such as food, tourism, and retail, and you should look at some of the most successful companies in your county for inspiration. However, if you are still struggling to think up potentially prosperous business ideas, you should consider popular business ideas such as dropshipping, dog walking, and coffee shops.
Once you have decided on your business idea, you need to make sure that you can find a niche to operate in. Your niche is what makes your company different from others. Having a niche is important as it can allow you to find a ready-made audience who are desperate for products such as yours. Not only this, but it can make you stand out from other local Suffolk businesses and ensure that you do not find yourself at war with a lot of companies who are in direct competition with you.
Conduct market research
Simply deciding on a local business idea that you believe will be fruitful is not enough, though. After you have done this, it is paramount that you conduct ample market research in Suffolk and the surrounding area. There are two different aspects of the market that you need to research. The first one that you should think about is your customer base and target audience. To find out whether people would be willing to buy the product or use the services that you are offering, you should carry out surveys in your local town centre which can help you to get an idea of what your customers are looking for. This can also help you to determine your target audience and the clientele that you will need to market your business to. If you are struggling to carry out in-person market research, you should consider doing this online by creating digital surveys and then sharing these on local or business social media pages.
The other market research that you need to do concerns other businesses in your industry. To research the competition and the state of the industry that you are heading into, you should perform a quick Google search, look at other companies and their websites, and even shop with them. This can help you to determine what products they are selling, how they are marketing their products, the experience that they are giving to customers, and what type of businesses are a success in Suffolk.
Get your business down on paper
Once you have established the parameters of your new small business venture, you should then make sure that you get your business down on paper as soon as possible. Writing a business plan is paramount to your future success as this can help you to establish the steps that you need to take to get your business up and running. It can also help you to spot and iron out issues as they arise. Not only this, but you can refer back to your business plan and update it as your business grows. This can help you to measure your progress and allow you to return to your core values and aims when you feel as if you do not know what your next moves should be.
Your business plan does not need to be complicated. Instead, it should simply include all of the basic information about your business. For instance, it should include your budget and financial projections. It should include the products and services that you are going to provide and how you are going to offer them. It should also have some details about how you are going to manage your business, the market that you are operating in, your goals and vision for your business, and how you are going to start growing it in the future.
Register your venture
However excited you are about finally realizing your life’s dream of opening your own local business in the Suffolk community that you love, you need to make sure that you are also aware of the boring but important parts of opening up your own business. These include registering your venture. You need to decide whether you are setting up as a sole trader, a limited company, or a partnership. While sole traders are the most common option, they are wholly responsible for all of their finances, whereas limited companies separate their personal and business finances. Most companies can set up as either sole traders or limited companies. Partnerships are only relevant to you if you decide to set up a business with someone else, and this means that you will split responsibility for all of your finances.
It is relatively simple to register a business, and you will be able to do this online. You must register your business to be legally recognised as a company and to pay your business taxes to HMRC.
Consider legal responsibilities
However, registering your venture is not your only legal responsibility. Every company will need a type of business insurance to ensure that they are financially protected if anything goes wrong. For instance, if there is a fire or if your stock is lost or stolen. Although you will need to take out general business insurance for your company, you may need other types of insurance in addition to this. Some businesses, for example, may need public liability insurance as this will protect you if a customer claims compensation from you for an injury. You may also need professional indemnity insurance in the event that a customer believes that you gave them bad advice or if you made an error.
Depending on the type of business that you decide to set up, you may also need to get a license for this. For instance, you may need a license if you are handling dangerous or toxic goods, if you are providing childcare services, if you are offering ear piercing services, if you are operating within the gambling industry, or if you are importing goods, such as food and even pets. It is paramount that you check these rules before you go any further with your company.
Get the appropriate funding
Your business will not be able to get very far without the appropriate funding. Your business needs funding in order to cover all of your start-up expenses, such as stock, equipment, the rent on any office or retail buildings, and employees. You may also need a generous amount of funding to keep your business afloat until it starts to get on its feet and until you start to build up a loyal customer base. This can prevent your company from folding within its first year, as many local companies do.
Then, to get the appropriate funding that your company needs to thrive, you should consider applying for business loans that can allow you to get the capital that you need and pay this back when your business has started to show signs of success. However, if you are concerned about being in debt, you should look for grants instead. Both the government and larger businesses offer start-up grants to deserving companies who foster innovation, and anyone can apply for these grants. There are also a few award schemes that may allow you to find funding.
Although the best way to fund your business is through your own savings, this is not always possible. You should look for angel investors who might be interested in helping your business to thrive in its first days. There are also angel investment schemes and funds in Suffolk that might be of interest to you.
Get a location
You also need to find the right location for your business in Suffolk. For instance, if you are opening a retail business, you should look around to find a road that has affordable rent and enough footfall to drive ample customers into your building. If you are setting up an office, you should consider finding shared office space or looking for a district where many companies within your industry are based. If your business budget is small, you might also consider running your business out of your Suffolk home.
Spread the word
Once your Suffolk business is set up, you should then try to spread the word about it. Although digital marketing is all the rage, with many Suffolk businesses using local Facebook social media pages to advertise, you should not forget that physical marketing can be effective when you use it well. For instance, you could use a direct mail campaign to communicate with customers in their homes or use poster marketing schemes to ensure that residents see your business everywhere. These can be great options if you want your small business to serve the local community.
You should also try to get the press involved, with there being many Suffolk-based news outlets that can help to get the word out about your business in print and online. To attract notice, you should create an exciting brand story or consider hosting a community event in your store to which the press can be invited.
There are currently around 900 Pokemon, in all shapes and sizes whether it’s a card game or a video game. But when it comes down to battle, some are better than others, based on stats such as Attack, Special Attack, Defence, Special Defence, HP and so on.
While all these stats are necessary to have, some like to play it aggressively and, in that case, having a high attack is crucial to land that final blow to the opposition. So, we have come up with the list of top 5 must-have Pokemon for attack!
Calyrex (Attack – 165)
Many Pokemon when it comes to appearance, they look like a cute little monster that no one would actually be afraid of, but not Calyrex. This Pokemon looks like a soldier ready for battle with what appears to be a mythical horse straight outta Greek god’s era.
With 165 base attack, Calyrex shows no mercy to the opponents in the battle. If you are going all out on the front line, having Calyrex could really turn the table around for you!
Rampardos (Attack – 165)
Dinosaurs are thing of a past, or are they? Well, looking at this Pokemon, I think they still exist. Rampardos has a skull as hard as Iron that can totally annihilate any defense. The attack stats falls on 165 for this rock-type Pokemon with blood red eyes, out for revenge.
Zacian (Attack – 170)
Speaking of battle, our next in the list, Zacian is all set for battle with its shiny sword. Zacian with its 170 base attack surely isn’t messing around, it can easily take out most Pokemon with a single strike of its sword.
And Zacian, quite easily tops the list for the most powerful fairy type Pokemon. It is a must have Pokemon for someone trying to unleash havoc on the opposition.
Deoxys (Attack – 180)
Speaking of appearances, Deoxys can easily fool anyone by it’s not so constant guise. It is one of the most powerful Pokemon when it comes to list of Psychic type, with a staggering base attack of 180. It looks like an alien of steroids.
Kartana (Attack – 181)
Making it to the top of our list, we have Kartana with an immense base attack of 181. It looks a starfish x some bird with blades for the limbs. It might not appear to be much of a danger, but Kartana can slay anyone who stands in its way.
If it ain’t apparent already, Kartana sure looks like name inspired by Katana, an exquisite sword known for deadly hits.
These are the top 5 Pokemon when it comes to deadly attack and in case you don’t have any, you can surely find some Pokemon Go Pokemons for cheap on Eldorado, the most trusted in-game trading platform where you can find all sorts of deals on your favourite titles.
Scotland’s pale footballers will wear these sun hats during today’s Euros opener because temperatures could soar to a record 15 degrees in Glasgow.
The incredible heat has never been seen before in Scotland and there are fears the football stars could melt.
Lorraine McFisher, 34, of the Scottish Football Association, said: “Our players are used to playing in sub-zero temperatures for most of the year.
“In summer, we might get the occasional shock of ten degrees. So for the thermometer to hit an expected 15 degrees around the 2pm kick-off time is unprecedented.
“We have secured 11 special sun hats for the players to wear during the game.
“They are those funny ones with the ginger wigs poking out underneath them.”
Scotland take on the Czech Republic at Hampden Park in Glasgow. If by some miracle they survive the heat and escape without a defeat, they will be full of confidence ahead of the clash with England on Friday evening.
“That match had been due to kick-off at 2pm as well,” said McFisher.
“But we insisted it was moved to an evening kick-off so that we don’t have to deal with the daytime sun in the south.”
