Golf giant celebrates Ryder Cup by sponsoring nuclear power station

0

By Sandy Driver, Golf Correspondent

Golf ball manufacturer Titleist celebrates next week’s Ryder Cup by sponsoring Sizewell B nuclear power station, we can reveal.

The company today painted its famous logo on the giant Sizewell dome, which dominates the Suffolk coast skyline and is commonly regarded as resembling a huge golf ball.

Income from the ad deal is put at £20 million over three years, much of which will be pumped into the local economy, such as second homes for Londoners and the manufacture of men’s red or mustard-coloured trousers.

Lorraine Fisher, 34, head of nuclear power at Sizewell, said: “The Ryder Cup in the United States might be dominating the golf news, but this Titleist advertising deal ensures Suffolk remains ahead of the game.

“We felt this was a great PR opportunity, and the sponsored ‘ball’ will raise money for the area, as well as attracting tourists.”

A spokesman for Titleist said: “It’s rather large, isn’t it? This is one golf ball you could never lose.”

Plans are still being discussed for a Sizewell C power station, and already planners are insisting on a football-style dome to attract sponsors such as Nike.

The Ryder Cup, between the United States and Europe, tees off at the Whistling Straits course in Wisconsin next Friday (Sept 24).

Today’s golf news is the biggest in Suffolk since a club announced it was installing undersoil heating to beat the winter weather.

Vicar mislays crate of fine Communion wine

A red-faced vicar claims he has lost a crate of fine red wine that was donated to his church for use in Holy Communion.

The Rev Evan Elpuss, 64, said he left the crate in the vestry at St Emilion Church in Ipswich, Suffolk.

But when he turned up for a service on Sunday, the vintage red wine had disappeared.

Nobody else has a key to the vestry, and there were no signs of a break-in.

“I had so much on over the last day or two; it’s all been a bit of a blur,” said Rev Elpuss.

“I’m sure the wine will turn up soon. In the meantime, if any of the congregation would like to donate some more, I should be very grateful.”

Perplexed parishioner Lorraine Fisher, 34, said this was not the first time some alcohol had gone astray.

“Last year, some beer and a bottle of vodka left in the church hall overnight for a fete raffle prize also went missing.

“None of us can work out what could possibly have happened to it.”

She admitted that Rev Elpuss had seemed a little forgetful recently. “He’s not at his best first thing in the morning. Or later in the day, come to think of it,” she said.

Drivers notice nothing new as Insulate Britain brings M25 to a standstill

BBC News footage of the M25 chaos

Beleaguered motorists say Insulate Britain’s coordinated stunt to close the M25 seemed like any other day.

The eco protestors closed off six junctions of Britain’s busiest motorway, saying they would continue to take action until the Government promised to do what they say.

But their actions backfired when motorists revealed the resulting queues and chaos were like any other day on the M25.

Van driver Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “If these people had a job, rather than being professional protestors, they may have had to drive along the M25 at some time or other.

“Had they done so, they would know that sitting around for hours in endless queues, usually for no apparent reason, is part of the routine.

“In other words, their silly actions made no difference to any of us.”

Daily Mail readers confused as immigrant wins through to US Open final

Emma celebrates on Twitter this morning

Daily Mail readers were confused this morning after an immigrant won through to the final of the US tennis Open.

Emma Raducanu, 18, has a Romanian dad and a Chinese mum and came to England when she was two.

But rather than being turned back at the border by politicians like Priti Patel, she went on to become a star – the first-ever qualifier to make it through to a Grand Slam final, and all without losing a set.

Mail and Express readers were celebrating her brilliant achievement this morning, before realising the confusing truth.

Bigot Steve Walshe, 43, from Lowestoft said: “Emma has that innate British spirit. True grit and perseverance.

“She has done the country proud; the first Brit to reach a major women’s final since Virginia Wade in 1977.

“Hang on. She migrated to the UK when she was two years old, you say?

“Come to think of it, her surname is a bit suspect.

“She should probably stay in New York.”

Giant six-foot lobster caught off Suffolk coast

Giant lobster
Claws at Sizewell before being put back to sea

A Suffolk fisherman thought he would need a bigger boat when he caught a giant six-foot lobster off Sizewell.

The collosol crustacean is thought to have been lurking beneath the waves for around 80 years before wrapping itself around one of Steve Walsh’s lobster pots.

“I thought the pot was snagged on something because it took some hauling up,” said Steve, 43.

“I had to use my mechanical winch; imagine my surprise when this giant lobster came up.

“He was so big that one snip of his giant claws could have taken my arm off.”

Steve sought help from other fishermen nearby to land the giant lobster, believed to be the biggest ever caught in the UK. They put ropes around the claws to prevent serious injury.

They dubbed the lobster ‘Claws’ and put him on the beach to measure him and estimate his weight.

But Claws is not destined for restaurant cooking pots around Suffolk. Steve decided to put him back in his home below the North Sea. He will miss out on thousands of pounds from the seafood market, but believes it was the right thing to do.

“Something this old and beautiful deserves to live out its days in peace, where it belongs.”

However, local mum Lorraine Fisher, 34, is worried about letting her children paddle on the beach in the Sizewell area.

“With this thing around, there could be an unfortunate incident.

“Do lobsters eat human flesh?”

Experts say Claws may have grown so large thanks to nutrients and food in the warm waters created by the Sizewell B nuclear power station.

Fifa meets to find new way of doing nothing about racist Hungary fans

Fifa top brass are meeting urgently to discuss new ways to do absolutely nothing about Hungary’s racist football fans.

England players were racially abused and objects thrown onto the pitch during last night’s World Cup qualifier in Budapest, which the Three Lions won 4-0.

As concerned fans cried foul, and Boris Johnson Tweeted his disgust, Fifa, the world’s football governing body, was already swinging into urgent action.

Fifa insider Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “We saw the Hungary fans behaving disgracefully, and not for the first time.

“We are meeting urgently so that we can come up with a new plan to do absolutely nothing about it.

“Then we will see so-called football supporters in Hungary shouting monkey noises and throwing things at black players in the next game.

“And pat ourselves on the back for a job well done.”

Neighbours thrilled as schoolboy decides to learn the trumpet

0

Residents in a Suffolk street were celebrating today after little Barnaby Fisher, ten, announced he was going to take up the trumpet.

Neighbours in Little Brimmer Road, Ipswich, can’t wait to hear how young Barnaby gets on.

Steve Walshe, who lives next door, said: “This is excellent news. Youngsters playing a musical instrument – what’s not to like?

“I have to say the trumpet will sound splendid at all hours of the day.

“It will be interesting listening to him trying to get a note. Within a few months, who knows, he might string a few together to make something resembling a tune.

“I expect my cat will leave home. But that’s a small price to pay for blossoming musical talent.”

Proud mum Lorraine Fisher, 34, said she can’t wait for Barnaby to start practising at home.

“He is going to be so good,” she squealed. “And then he can take his trumpet on holiday to Aldeburgh and everyone there will love listening to him, wishing their own children were so clever.”

Suffolk Gazette music critic Peter Grimes said it was unlikely that Barnaby would turn out to be the next Louis Armstrong.

“But I’m sure everyone will be urging him to play as much as he can at home to give him every chance of success.”
