Unstoppable Bungay Ice Cream Van Fire Rages On

Suffolk Firefighters Set Wednesday Target to Extinguish Bungay Blaze.

BUNGAY — Emergency services remain on the scene of a growing blaze on Trinity Street after an ice cream van caught fire at approximately 12:45 p.m. today, generating thick smoke visible from the nearby St. Edmunds RC Primary School and Nursery.

Firefighters from Beccles and Bungay arrived shortly after the initial alarm and spent more than 30 minutes attempting to extinguish the burning dessert vehicle. Their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and the fire has since expanded its scope.

According to a spokesman for the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, the initial cause of the blaze remains entirely unknown. No injuries have been reported, largely because the flames are moving at a manageable, highly predictable pace. However, the incident has escalated following the ignition of a second vehicle: a yellow, three-wheeled Reliant Robin featuring the phrase “Trotter’s Independent Traders” painted along the side.

The service confirmed that the fire has also claimed a nearby wooden garden fence and a small cluster of decorative garden gnomes.

“The situation is currently ongoing,” the spokesman stated. “While we initially focused on the soft-serve unit, the involvement of the three-wheeler and the lawn ornaments has shifted our timeline. We are optimistic about bringing the fire under control by next Wednesday, though that estimate remains subject to change should additional nearby objects catch fire in the interim.”

Local authorities have advised residents to keep their windows closed to prevent the smell of burning vanilla, melted fiberglass, and incinerated resin from entering their homes.

Fire crews intend to stay on Trinity Street indefinitely, monitoring the situation while waiting to see if any further stationary items in the immediate vicinity catch fire before the weekend.
