Orwell Bridge damaged by Storm Eunice high winds

Repair work has already started on the Orwell Bridge

The Orwell Bridge suffered some slight damage as Storm Eunice swept through Suffolk.

Each end of the bridge fell away into the River Orwell, leaving just the middle section intact.

Luckily, no-one was injured, although Amazon delivery driver Lorraine Fisher, 34, was stranded in the middle for three hours before being rescued by helicopter.

Engineers say there is nothing to be alarmed about – even though our exclusive photo appears to show serious damage this morning.

They have already erected a crane and expect to lift the fallen sections back into place by tomorrow.

“It’s perfectly safe,” said county highways official Steve Walshe. “This sort of thing happens all the time.

“The sections will be fitted back together and it will be all systems go again.”

Storm Eunice caused issues across much of Britain, with the south-west and south-east put on red alert.

The bridge closure caused some heavy traffic delays as drivers sought alternative routes through Ipswich.
