NASA now searching for signs of intelligent life in Norfolk

NASA scientists have confirmed their next mission is to search for any signs of intelligent life in Norfolk.

After finding out much about Mars, boffins say they are now determined to find evidence of electricity, working Internet and intelligent species in the remote East Anglian county.

“It’s one of the UK’s unexplored outposts,” explained NASA’s Dr Lorraine Fisher, 34. “Our initial satellite imagery data suggests some conditions may be suitable for life, but such is the hostile nature of the area we are not too hopeful.

“Norfolk is a very long way away and takes many years to get to – this makes it our toughest mission yet.”

People in Suffolk have been convinced there is something stirring in Norfolk for years – with legendary tales of sloth-like figures with six fingers and massive webbed feet roaming the Norfolk Broads area.

Halesworth scientist George Smith said: “It does not seem plausible that the only intelligent life in East Anglia can be in Suffolk. These are exciting times and we are all staring out to Norfolk from our observatories with hopes of spotting something amazing.”

The NASA teams aim to send their exploratory craft along the space highway — codenamed the A11 — and beam back pictures that may prove their hunch of life is correct.

A spokesman said: “With so much water apparently available in the Norfolk Broads area, that is where we will begin our search for intelligence. We’ll be trying in the Wroxham district first.”

They hope that once conditions for life are confirmed, with the availability of electricity, humans will be able to populate the county.

A man has been hounded out of Suffolk after suggesting an International Women’s Day banner should have been ironed first.

“This is what happens when women get ideas above their station,” said sexist dinosaur Steve Walshe, 43.

He was overheard making the remark and asked to leave the office building – and the county, for that matter.

Organiser Lorraine Fisher, 34, from Woodbridge in Suffolk, said the banner, prepared for International Women’s Day this Friday, was fine and got the message across perfectly well.

“Only a man could look at the banner and think, ‘That needs a good ironing’.

“I’m afraid Mr Walshe is just the sort of sexist pig that has contributed to gender inequality across the world.

“The banner was put up in our office as a show of support, and we won’t stand by letting men make cheap jokes out of it.”

International Women’s Day could have ironed it

Far from cashing in by using the banner photograph, the Suffolk Gazette publishes it only to ensure everyone agrees the ironing joke was a step too far.

A spokesperson for the newspaper said: “The Suffolk Gazette is a huge supporter of International Women’s Day.

“Only yesterday we announced that all women will be able to read the publication for free for a month.”

Mr Walshe said he wasn’t being sexist when he made ‘International Women’s Day could have ironed it’ remark earlier today.

“It is correct to say that the banner could have done with an iron. But my statement was gender neutral – it was aimed at men just as much as women.

“Honest.”

Suffolk treacle mine makes record profit

The owners of the last remaining treacle mine in East Anglia have announced record annual profits.

Blaxhall Treacle Industries (BTI) announced pre-tax profits of £17 million for the 12 months up to August 1, in a statement to the Stock Exchange this morning.

The record results, up 23% on the previous year, sent BTI shares soaring to 473p in early trading.

Treacle mining has all but died out in Britain since highly-publicised battles with the unions in the 1980s.

But the operation in Blaxhall in Suffolk remained open throughout the troubles because it was largely operated by a non-unionised workforce.

It meant Blaxhall, which was first mined in 1817, was in the perfect position to capitalise when other operations, particularly all 17 Norfolk treacle mines, closed down.

BTI says it recently discovered a new seam of treacle about 140 feet underground, and the addition recently of new hi-tech mining equipment from South Africa was paying great dividends.

The company, which employs 64 Suffolk miners, is one of the leading suppliers of treacle and syrup products to British supermarkets, with production currently standing at more than 3,000 tons a year.

The natural resource comes from belts of crushed sugar cane, some of it thousands of years old, found in seams deep underground.

BTI chairman Lorraine Fisher, 34, said: “The last year has been good. We have a new seam to extract from, and demand for treacle and golden syrup is extremely high, helped by Britain’s famous sweet tooth.

“Revenues are up, costs are down and our borrowing is at an all-time low. The future of treacle mining in Suffolk is secure.”

Treacle mining is highly dangerous, with regular rockfalls in the shafts and tunnels built under the Suffolk countryside.

Because of the danger, the exact location of the BTI mine is a closely-guarded secret in order to prevent local children from treacle scrumping.

The Suffolk Gazette agreed to only show a road sign to the mine, rather than reveal its address, about 200 yards on the left down Blaxhall Church Lane.
