SOUTHEND-ON-SEA — A afternoon outing intended for gentle sea breezes took a dangerous turn on Tuesday when two local carehome Pensioners drifted off to sleep on the shore, only to wake up fully engulfed by the incoming tide.

Doris Perkins, 81, and Marion Shepherd, 79, both residents of the nearby ‘Final Curtain’ care home directly across the street, had wheel-chaperoned themselves down to the Southend-On-Sea coastline to enjoy an unusually warm afternoon. According to witnesses, the pair positioned their wheelchairs at the water’s edge to catch a fresh coastal draft before both succumbed to the heat and entered a deep, synchronized slumber.

Over the course of three hours, the North Sea steadily advanced, eventually submerging the lower frames of both wheelchairs and soaking the pensioners up to their waists.

Water on the knee

The alarm was raised at approximately 4:15 p.m. when a passerby noticed two hand-knitted blankets floating independently past the pier. Local emergency services responded to the scene, where life-guards successfully wheeled both women back to dry land. Neither pensioner reported significant distress, though Ms. Perkins noted mild disappointment regarding the state of her seaweed-entangled compression socks.

Care home staff immediately initiated recovery protocols, administering hot water bottles and a strong cup of tea to both individuals.

“The water was a bit nip, to be honest,” stated Ms. Shepherd during her post-rescue evaluation. “Next time, we’ll bring armbands.”

Management at ‘Final Curtain’ confirmed that future beach outings will include designated alarm clocks and tide tables for all participating residents.
